WET - Preview
Developed by A2M, the same developers behind Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and a lot of teeny bopper titles, which are A not worth mentioning and B nothing in the shadow of this game.
In the past they’ve worked on titles that have been other people’s property, and often just porting them to another console. Well this time the developer have really stepped up with creating WET, a action, shooter/slasher grind house inspired title.
First seeing the game I was expecting something a little bit like a rip off of John Woo’s Stranglehold. But man was I wrong Artificial Mind + Movement, otherwise shortened to A2M… just don’t google that, have created a pretty fun title here.
Okay sure this is only a preview and not the full retail copy but the demo does what any great demo should do and get you into the game.
At the minute the story is a bit of a mystery and we have no idea why, the story was wrote by the dude that wrote a 24 and it makes us wonder why it wasn’t shown more in the demo… well I can only guess why, the story like a grind house film might not be the best part and certainly from the demo we can see that the gameplay is in the limelight.
It opens with a brief tutorial of some of the slow-mo moves you can do and allows you play quite a bit, this is quite fun but can become quite reparative without variety of other moves but the variety of gameplay is quite impressive. Next up is the feature that will make you change your mind, Blood. Nope I don’t mean just blood, it’s Rubi’s rage mode, which we are guessing can only be activated by the game in certain areas. It’s a bit of a shame as this feature will bring a smile to your face as Rubi gains a speed boost, a few new moves and just a lot of dead henchmen. This is honestly the coolest feature I’ve seen.
Now is a Arena battle, we’re guessing these parts are the bits heavily inspired by the Crazy 88’s fight from Kill Bill, as the enemies will just keep coming and coming until you close off the spawn points, these can be fun but feel a bit lacking as you generally wont see that many of screen at once… which in turn might be a good thing as they have some crazy accessory. We did come across one little bug in this area after shutting the second spawn point, an enemies leg suddenly become long and was stuck in the nearby ceiling, he then seemed the bob up and down like they were bungee jumping.
The final new gameplay feature involves a massive car chase… with you on the roof of the car of course. This scene could even make the Matrix scene blush, with the slow-mo, shooting and diving going on, this scene is mostly a quick time event though which is slightly disappointing with the developers hyping it up, I was hoping for a cleverly constructed timed running thing but oh well. This was still quite fun to play with some shooting going on.
Overall the presentation style fits the grind house style, that sort of 70’s B movie feel and maybe that’s what this game is, sure the graphics are pretty good, characters and environment are well detailed and even the voice work is spot on but it just feels like this game is missing something still. More of a B game rather than an AAA game but still a pretty solid one. Check out the demo and make an opinion for yourself as this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but most people will eat it up.
I know for one I look forward to its release, September 13th.
