Dissdia: Final Fantasy - Preview
Although rather short, a demo is definitely welcome as this is one title that most Final Fantasy fans were some what sceptical about. A fighter within the FF universe? How can this be?
Well rest assured FF fans, Sqaure Enix as delivered a truly unique fighter. The demo features 5 playable characters from the first Final Fantasy to FFVII(7), two in fact from FF7… guess who. Yep massive fan favourites Cloud Strief and Sephrioth, both of which are voiced by the actors from Advent Children.
Now the game doesn’t mention the story, and pretty much like WET, get’s you straight into the action to understand the mechanics of this fighter… all be a strategic fighter and I don’t mean by the timing.
The game comes with a health bar, like all fighters, but also this points system. Now these points are essentially your strength points which allows you to do damage to your opponent, for example if you have 159 points then you’ll do 159 damage if you press square. Circle on the other hand, drains your opponent’s points allowing you to eventually get so many points you can destroy your opponent with one swing that is unless they have their EX bar up or collect that EX bell.
This EX bar is again, basically a limit break bar and once full, you’ll have to press R1 + Square, to activate EX Mode (This will transform so fighters, i.e. Sephrioth will grow his wing) once you’ve activated the mode and successfully struck your enemy you’ll go into a quick time event, which are always based around the FF game these characters are from.
So that’s the basics of the fights down, but here comes an extra fighter twist, the Arena is massive with you and your opponent on opposite sides. But there is a quick way to get around, you can quickly run or jump, and also slide on light and wall run, as well as glide if standing in the right place, for the slide, wall run and glade you’ll have to wait for a small triangle to appear before you can zoom. You can also do a quick dash but often needing to do this a few times to get to your opponent.
Overall the demo is quite fun, although a bit short but perfect for getting you used to the features of the game, like previously mentioned, hopefully the story can back up the gameplay and make for another great Square Enix title on the PSP.
